Bryan Parris

Bryan Parris, steel drum player/composer and songwriter, started playing bass, piano and guitar while in high school, in his native Trinidad, performing in various groups, before taking up the steel drum, during the last year of high school.

He began with Tokyo Steel Orchestra, then moved on to Starlift, under legendary arranger Ray Holman, and was among the, now famous, 18 members who left to form “Phase 2 Pan Groove”, propelled by the innovative arrangements of virtuoso steel pan player, Len Boogsie Sharpe, a band which continues to be one of the premier steel bands in the world today.
During the 80’s, he briefly studied music at the New England Conservatory, but spent most of his time hanging around, nearby Berkley College of music, regularly using their facilities, doing recitals with several students though never officially studying there.

Bryan toured Europe during the early ‘90’s, visiting Italy, Germany, England, Spain, Greece and Switzerland several times, bringing the sound of the steel drums to many people who had never seen nor heard jazz played on this fascinating instrument before. He has worked with many world class artists, (both live and in the studio), such as – Eric Gale, Bob Dylan, Sun-Ra, Wall of Voodoo, Film composer James Horner, Janice Ian, Randy Tico, Delmar Brown, The Neville Brothers, Tootie Heath & Macau, Taj Mahal / Pheroan Aklaaf, Charles Wright and June Millington, among others.
His composition, “Caribbean Connection”, is part of the soundtrack of the Disney movie, “Rock & Roll Mom”, and Azar Lawrence, Randi Paldi and Len Boogsie Sharpe also credit him as a composer on albums.  Bryan performed at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, the Peninsula Music Festival, The Beverly Hills Arts Festival, to name a few.  In the mid ‘80’s, Bryan and his band,  “Caribbean Connection”, could regularly be seen and heard at the Tropicana Hotel Casino, Las Vegas, as part of their Caribbean Paradise promotion. “It’s not Jamaica man; it’s not Mazatlan, it’s not the Bahamas; it’s de Island of Las Vegas”. More recently he has performed at the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival and the San Pedro International Jazz Festival.

Since the mid ‘90’s, Bryan has been living & working the Mexican Caribbean, specialising in corporate and other private events, performing at major Cancun hotels, including – Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, Coral Beach, Marriott Casa Magna, Fiesta Americana Condesa and Le Meridien, occasionally doing the same in Mexico City and Acapulco. He also worked regularly at the Plantation House, Cancun (three times per week) for two years, from October 2002 – August 2004.
