Pantasia Steel Band

Pantasia Steel Band - pantasia@panpodium.com

Pantasia derives from the word Fantasia which means 'a potpourri of popular tunes woven together'. The name was chosen to emphasise the fact that the music was being played by steel pan instruments.

Pantasia Steel Band was founded in 1995 when a few friends who were unable to rehearse with their Steel Orchestra, decided to set up a 'gigging' side. This enabled them to continue playing steel pan. The band is currently based at the Selby Community Centre, Tottenham, London, where it enjoys genuine interest and enthusiasm from onlookers.

Pantasia has attracted players from schools and others who have experience of performing at national and international arenas such as Notting Hill and Trinidad carnivals. One of Pantasia's successful projects includes running a beginner's class. The class aims to develop opportunities for individuals to learn the art of playing steel pan. It also has a particular emphasis on reaching young people who may have limited prospects for music making.

Pantasia has a wealth of multi-talented players, some of whom teach in schools and aspire to become musical arrangers. Their skills were rewarded when Pantasia attained runners up position in the 2003 BAS Pan Explosion competition. This was their first competition and the praise received was overwhelming. The band's profile was certainly raised that night and this in itself signalled the beginning of many more festival and competition entries. This was truly an enjoyable, memorable and learning experience for the band.  In fact, in 2005; they were victorious at the BAS Pan Explosion competition held in Portsmouth and retained their championship title in 2006 at The Drum, Birmingham. They are also a favourite at BAS Trafalgar Square Pan Jamboree where they have performed on several occasions.

Pantasia took part in Panorama and Notting Hill Carnival 2006 for the first time. It was a challenging and rewarding experience.
