The Comets steelband based in the 'Pan Pavilion', South Norwood has been the subject of complaints by a minority of neighbours that has resulted in a meeting with the Croydon Council concerning the noise levels during their practice sessions.
In just a few years the Comets Community Project supported by National Lottery funding has developed immensely, attracting a substantial number of young people from the London Borough of Croydon. They offer young people especially teenagers the opportunity to play music using the steelpan. This exposure can lead to a career in music which has been the case for many other young pan musicians throughout London. This facility takes a number of the borough's teenagers off the streets, participating in something meaningful that can lead to a career in music.
In the last two years, Comets has participated in the Notting Hill Carnival placing seventh and fifth respectively in the Best Band on the Road competition. In 2007, they captured third place in the BAS/CAPCA Junior Steelband Competition thus revealing the musical talents of their young muscians nurtured by the project.
Please support Comets plight to retain their panyard by writing to the Croydon Council in support of them keeping their panyard and continuing their invaluable work with the young people of their community.
