BAS YESC Pan Explosion 2016 – 25 and Under Ensembles results

On a bleak autumnal evening on the 12th November the British Association of Steel bands Youth Engagement Sub-Committee (BAS YESC) hosted another successful Pan Explosion Ensembles competition at the Yaa Centre, 1 Chippenham Mews, London W9. The weather did not deter the audience from attending this iconic event that gives a platform to young pan musicians, arrangers and composers to display their musical skills and also provide them with an opportunity to develop their musical careers.

The competition consisted of two categories – 25 and Under and 26 and Over.

The 25 and Under category saw Croydon, Sussex and Pan Nation Steel orchestras competing for the winner’s podium.

Pan Nation was victorious with 484 points.  Diarra Walcott-Ivanhoe musically arranged their Own Composition, Tachyon and Tune of Choice – Affirmation composed by Jose Feliciano. Diarra is 18 years old and started playing pan at age 6 and started composing at 14. He is a pianist and was part of the Haringey Young Musicians Steel Orchestra who went on to tour Barbados in 2013. Diarra joined Pan Nation Steel Orchestra in 2014. He is still studying music at University.

Pan Nation’s  other pan musicians in their Ensemble included Nia Reid, Kymarni Appleton, Taya Ming, Elizabeth Joojo-Richards, Alyssia Rodgers-Levine and Nathaniel Ricketts.

In 2nd place was Sussex Steel Orchestra with 462 points. Their Own composition, Morning Groove and Tune of Choice, Breakthrough composed by Amrit Samaroo and Mark Loquan were arranged by Pablo Barrios.  Pablo is a member of TLA and Sussex teel for five years and is currently a composition student at the Purcell School of Music.

Sussex other pan musicians in their Ensemble were Mica Allen, Marlowe McCaffery, Sam Chandler, Elliot Grout, Phoebe Humphrey and Brad Gunter.

Croydon Steel Orchestra led by Jody Humphries attained 445 points to capture 3rd place. Their Own composition, Euphoria and Tune of Choice, Somebody composed by Baron were musically arranged by Jody. He started playing pan at the age of 8 and joined roydon Steel orchestra in 2009. Jody started arranging at 16 and regularly arranges musical pieces for CSO including their 2015 and 2016 unior Panorama tunes where the placed third in both years. He has started teaching the art of playing steelpans in primary schools across South London thus ensuring the continuity of the artform.

CSO other pan musicians in their Ensemble included Jericho Phiri, Jordan Quinn, Shaniya Hamilton, Jordan White and Jonathan Turner.

Judges

It was a great competition in which all participants and audience fully enjoyed themselves. They were all winners on the night with steelpan music being the overall champion. Everyone looking forward to the 2017 Pan Explosion competition.
