BAS/CAPCA Junior Steelband Competition 2K16

Ebony captures the CAPCA/BAS Junior Panorama 2016 title

On Monday the 8th August 2016, the annual CAPCA/BAS Carnival and Junior Steel band Panorama competitions transformed the Kensington Memorial Park, St Marks Road, London W10 into a Carnival Village. The park was filled with sweet strains of steelband music from the junior steelbands dotted around the Park completing their final rehearsals before the competition. Nostalgia steel band led by Lionel McCalman accompanied the Carnival parade before the start of the Junior Panorama competition.

The British Association of Steelbands in partnership with the Children and Parents Carnival Association under the stewardship and guidance of Lee Woolford Chivers hosted the Junior Steelband competition 2016. Judges on the day were Debby ‘Pan Diva’ Romain, Pat Munroe and Anthony Woolford – Lee’s son.

Ebony Junior Steel Band Trust treated the audience to a scintillating David Ijaduola’s arrangement of Teddyson John’s, ‘Allez’. Their tight delivery and profound dexterity earn them the Champion’s podium again. In second place was Endurance steel orchestra under the musical directorship of Marlon Hibbert played, ‘Breakthrough’ by Chuck Gordon. A great achievement for Endurance as this was their first appearance at this competition. Marlon continues to work tirelessly, inspiring his young musicians. Croydon Steel Orchestra led by two young and gifted musicians, Temitayo Ken-Afolabi and Jody Humphries with their musically arranged rendition of Voice’s ‘Cheers for Life’ saw them earn third place. This was a great achievement for the younger arrangers on their musical arranging journey.

In fourth place was Metronomes Steel Orchestra led by Eversley ‘Breeze’ Mills who commanded a powerful delivery from his energetic conducting. Metro’s rendition of Scrunter’s, ‘Woman on the Bass’ was a musical treat. Northern Steel Orchestra returned this year to defend their title. Jenny Gilberg continues to work with her youthful band that had bags of enthusiasm. Their musical rendition was well received by the audience. Her musical inspiration, support and guidance will see Northern Steel continue their consistent progress in the future.  In sixth place was Eclipse Steel Orchestra. This was Eclipse’s first attendance at this event and their rendition of Kes’s, ‘People’, musically arranged by David Ijaduola earned them 180 points.

The audience was treated to an explosion of sweet steel band music played by young enthusiastic pan musicians. On the day steel band music was the overall winner; the wealth of music on offer certainly captivated the audience. This infectious music is spreading like a global pandemic and Pan Podium is ably assisting in its dispersion. Everyone is now looking forward to next year’s competition with great enthusiasm. Pan 4 Life!
