Greetings:

Two decades ago, Kenrick P. Thomas, a true-true Trinbagonian from Tacarigua, completed this extraordinary book presenting an in-depth and from-the-inside account of “Tacarigua’s Contribution to the Evolution of the Steelband Phenomenon in Trinidad and Tobago.” Since Thomas is “one of we,” his voice is our voice—“we voice.” Original World Press (OWP) was founded in 1994 precisely to provide a forum for those voices which have been traditionally overlooked by Western Civilization’s mainstream publishers. We at OWP seek to bring scholarship to the people and the people to scholarship. This 2014 republication of the first edition of Panriga: Tacarigua’s Contribution to the Evolution of the Steelband Phenomenon in Trinidad and Tobago is, then, a major step forward on the road to emancipation from mental slavery.

Kenrick P. Thomas was born in Cane Farm Village but grew up in Dinsley Village, Tacarigua. He became directly involved with steelband music in 1946 at the early age of thirteen years, when he was drafted into the village’s steelband, Boom Town, to play one of the pans called the “kittle.” In 1962, he was elected to the executive committee of the National Association of Trinidad and Tobago Steelbandsmen (NATTS) under the presidency of George Goddard. He demitted in 1971, the same year in which NATTS evolved into Pan Trinbago.

We greatly look forward to seeing you at NALIS on Thursday, March 20.

Sincerely,

Ian Isidore Smart
