La Pierre: Steel pan jobs lacking in Cayman

Earl La Pierre, has lived in Grand Cayman for three decades and through his school “Cayman School for Pan” he’s taught more then 2,000 students and adults. But he says there is nowhere on island for talented young musicians to continue developing their skills. “There’s so many steel band players that don’t even have a job to play steel pan in a hotel. Most of the hotels are not even hiring steel pan players, is all about DJ’s now,” he said.

The man who is know as “The Godfather” of steel pan says the opportunities need to be made available for steel pan musicians.

“I think most of these kids that have learnt and are dying for the opportunity at least to play in a hotel or play in their country, or play at the airport; play at the docks or something; and they’re just not doing anything,” he said. Mr. La Pierre first arrived in Cayman in 1986. He has led several Caymanian bands and steel pan musicians to win competitions locally and internationally.
