Laborie Pan Project hosts lecture by Trinidadian Pan Master

Taking advantage of the Carnival Season and of the presence in Saint Lucia of a group of musicians from the PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars steelband from Trinidad and Tobago, Labowi Promotions and the Laborie Pan Project are on Sunday hosting a lecture and workshop that will be conducted by Marcus Ash, Silver Stars’ drill master. This takes place on Sunday 10 July at 4pm at the Laborie Parish Hall.

Marcus Ash is an established musician with over 15 years of experience in performance on the Steelpan. He has held many portfolios during this period. He recently contested, and won the position of Secretary on the executive of Pan Trinbago’s Eastern Region back in November 2015. He has also been a member of the National Steel Symphony Orchestra of Trinidad and Tobago (NSSO) for the past nine years, and he currently serves as the group’s Secretary.

During the last eight years, Marcus has toured to over twenty-five countries with different groups/projects, and has touched all inhabited Continents as an ambassador for Trinidad and Tobago using the Steelpan. Marcus began studies in Musical Arts at the University of the West Indies (UWI) back in 2005 when he was accepted for the Certificate in Music. In 2007 he then went on to pursue his BA in Musical Arts. Marcus is also a private teacher who teaches Music Literacy on the Steelpan. In this workshop, Marcus Ash will present and discuss the history, development and significance of Steelpan. The instrument was invented in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. However, the entire West Indies is home to the instrument. He will take a look at the impact of Steelpan on the islands of the Caribbean, as Steelpan is shown not just as an invention of Trinidad and Tobago, but rather as a Caribbean merit. He will discuss the contributions of the neighboring islands in the making of the Steelpan as a recognizable and beneficial force to the world
