Local music includes blues, Buffett, steel band

As usual, there’s plenty of good music available in our lovely Whitewater Valley this week.

Having spent an 18-year vacation in the Caribbean, I tend to feel down-right parental about steel-pan music, and two shows in Oxford this weekend will help take me and my steel-pan ears in a new direction.

On Friday night, the Miami University Steel Band has prepared an all-classical music program featuring works by Bach, Vivaldi and Chopin. Special guest performers will include Richmond Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Harvey Thurmer (violin), Michele Gingras (clarinet) and Marco Panuccio (lyric tenor).

On Saturday, the band offers a program of more traditional Trini-music from folks such as Papa Houdini, Lord Kitchener or the Mighty Sparrow.

When we think of Caribbean music, one of the first names to pop up is Jimmy Buffett, and at the Gibson Theatre in Batesville on Saturday, Pirates of the Caribbean will be on hand for a salute to Buffett.

Meanwhile, blues also is available on Saturday night. Big James and the Chicago Playboys will play the 4th Floor Blues Club in Richmond on Saturday as part of the InConcert series.

Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 each and available only in advance. Those attending must be 21 or older.

Big James is a six-time Living Blues Magazine Critics Choice Award Winner and a five-time Nominated Blues Music Award winner. His music can be heard athttp://inconcertrichmond.com.

The opening band is Nvizion.

Although it’s the night of the NCAA Final Four men’s semifinals, basketball fans still can take part in the concert. A 160-inch TV will show the games.

Food and a cash bar are available at the blues club.

If you’re interested in Western music and comedy, Riders in the Sky will be at Martin Marietta Theater in Harrison, Ohio, also on Saturday.
