Old St.Joseph Road to be renamed in honor of late legendary steelband icon Bertie Marshall

HIGHLANDERS STEEL ORCHESTRA IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT WE HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN OUR EFFORTS TO RE-NAME THE OLD ST. JOSEPH ROAD, SUCCESS VILLAGE, LAVENTILLE

AS THE OLD ST JOSEPH ROAD/BERTIE MARSHALL BOULEVARD.

bertie

Bertie Marshall, former tuner, arranger and captain of Highlanders Steel Orchestra.                                   Recipient of the CHACONIA MEDAL (GOLD) in 1992 and the nation’s highest award,  the ORDER OF THE REPUBLIC OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO IN 2008.

In recognition of his contribution to the development of the steel pan, our national instrument, the executive committee of Highlanders Steel Orchestra organised the Success Village Laventille community, and petitioned the government to recognise Bertie Marshall by renaming the Old St. Joseph road in his honour. Bertie Marshall is widely regarded, both nationally and internationally, as one of the greatest innovators and researchers of the steel pan.

Through persistence, diligence and hard work, Highlanders Steel Orchestra was advised by the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure that the organisation’s request was granted by cabinet on Thursday 26, September 2013.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, a street sign unveiling ceremony is scheduled to take place on Thursday 17, October 2013 at 5:00pm, at the corner of Erica Street and the Old St. Joseph/Bertie Marshall Boulevard, Success Village, Laventille. This corner was chosen because it was the residence of Bertie Marshall, as well as the original home of the Highlanders Steel Orchestra. There will be live entertainment, and refreshments will be served.

Highlanders is in the process of rebuilding a steel orchestra, and is seeking members of the community who would like to be part of this historic band.
