Pan legend Anthony Williams celebrates 83rd birthday

Deputy Mayor of the City of Port of Spain Keron Valentine together with the Pan Tuners Guild and Pan Trinbago Inc will celebrate Grandmaster Tuner Anthony Williams ORTT. The pan celebration is in honour of Williams’ 83rd birthday which he will celebrate on June 24 but all the action will take place on June 21.

The celebrations will take place at the St James Amphitheatre where the sounds of steel will resound from 3 p.m.  Heading the list of steel orchestras to perform is reigning Panorama champions Petrotrin Phase 11 Pan Groove along with Humming Bird Pan Groove, White Oak Starlift Steel Orchestra, CAL Invaders, Carib Woodbrook Playboyz, Power Stars, and Sappophonics.

Williams, a pan pioneer/inventor/tuner was one of the players in the Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra (TASPO) which journeyed to England for the “Festival of Britain” in 1951. He was also the leader and tuner of Pan Am North Stars and in 1953 invented a soprano pan laid out with the circle of fifths; because the pan look like a spider’s web it was called the spider web pan.
