Pan Royale at QRC today

The 12th edition of the Trinidad and Tobago Steelpan and Jazz Festival gets underway tomorrow at the Queen’s Royal College Courtyard, Port-of-Spain with Pan Royale. WITCO Desperadoes, Neal and Massy Trinidad All Stars, bpTT Renegades and Petrotrin PhaseII Pan Groove will provide entertainment for patrons when the concert begins at 7 pm.  The Festival continues with the International Steelpan Jazz Challenge (The Challenge) which takes place on Sunday October 27 at Queen’s Hall.

Earlier this week, the organising committee for the Festival issued a release announcing that the qualifying round of the Challenge, which had originally been scheduled for this Sunday, had been cancelled due to unspecified “logistical and financial reasons.”  As a result, participating steelbands will only be required to play one song from a list of suggested tunes.

Bands in the line-up for the challenge are J Major Jazz, Golden Hands, UTT, Courts Sound Specialist of Laventille, Codrington Pan Family, Moyenne, Tamana Pioneers, NLCB Buccooneers, Sadiki Sticks on Steel, Witco Desperadoes, TT Police Service Jazz, Fusion Steel and White Oak Starlift.  Young musicians will also have the opportunity to develop their skills and talent during the festival with developmental workshops to take place from October 22 to October 25. These workshops will be held in San Fernando, Sangre Grande, Arouca and Port-of-Spain, on Tuesday October 22 to Friday October 25. Presented by First Citizens Bank, these workshops would be facilitated by Charlie Sepulveda, who will be assisted by Gabriel Rodriguez.
