POS Corporation and Phase II in mediation over eviction issue

REIGNING Panorama champion Phase II Pan Groove has agreed to enter mediation with the Port-of-Spain City Corporation as the two battle over the steelband’s Hamilton Street, Woodbrook, home. The top steelband is defending attempts by the Port-of-Spain City Corporation to evict them from the premises to make way for the completion of the One Woodbrook Place Project, owned by Home Construction Limited.  The matter was set for trial on Thursday, but was instead adjourned to yesterday.

Justice Carol Gobin is presiding over the case in the Port-of-Spain High Court. A site visit was conducted on Thursday by the parties who returned to court yesterday, and indicated to the judge that they had both agreed to enter mediation in an attempt to settle the issue regarding the occupation of the premises.  If the mediation process fails, then the matter will proceed to trial on July 8. A status hearing will be held on April 2 to ascertain the progress made in mediation.

It is the City Corporation’s position that provisions were made for Phase II at an assigned area near the Foreshore in Mucurapo, and as owner of the land, had sold it to HCL for its OWP development. Phase II has called Hamilton Street home for more than three decades and they claim the panyard is a piece of history, and they had certain rights because of their possession of the property.
