Aspiring upcoming young men and women set to become the new cadre of composers for the next generation of steelband, successfully completed a composing workshop at the San Fernando East Junior Secondary School in Pleasantville last month.
The 25 participants, among them one teacher, were mainly secondary school students, and were all exposed to a three-week course in the techniques of composing for the pan. The exercise was the brainchild of the Pan in Schools Co-ordinating Council, and was made possible through the sponsorship of BPTT. The students were tutored by Paul Massy and Vanessa Headley, who are both well qualified in the field of music.
They said they were pleased with the attitudes and the accomplishments of the students. “This is a very good initiative on the part of BPTT for doing this. We have had more than we catered for. I am very happy that students are taking the time during the vacation to spend it on music,” Headley said. “Students have each accomplished the six compositions set to them during the three weeks.
Some of the children are in form three and will be better off than those going into Form five to write the CSEC Music exam,” she added. Massy encouraged the participants to take the basic skills and use them well, and reminded them that they needed to work on preparing their portfolios for their graduation in September.
